Peace United Church of Christ

News from the March 18th Bulletin

Upcoming Dates:

Just a few things to keep in mind. The final chapter of the Lenten series on Corinthians will be held this coming Wednesday evening. We’ll be looking at the difference that hope makes in the lives of the Corinthians and in ourselves. All are welcome to come and enjoy the potato bar at 6:30 and study at 7:00, even if you have not been able to come to the other Wednesday evening programs.
Next Sunday is Palm/Passion Sunday. It’s also our day for pennies and cookies. Children will bring in palms at the very beginning of the service.
In even numbered years, such as this one, we’ve been holding a Seder (Passover) meal. It will be on Maundy Thursday, March 29th. We’ll begin at 6:30. (This is not a “school” night; schools are closed the next day, Good Friday.) The Seder is a sacred and joyous meal whose origins go back over 3,000 years. There are special parts for children as we recall and teach the story of the Exodus. This is a “dress up” meal and we do ask for reservations. Please use the bulletin insert to make reservations.
On Friday evening we will have the traditional Good Friday Tenebrae service, or service of shadows. Admittedly, it’s not quite as dramatic when held during Daylight Savings Time, but we still remember the darkening of the earth as its Savior breathed his last.
Easter Sunrise service will be held at the cemetery, weather permitting. If it’s cold or wet we’ll meet in the sanctuary. Either way it will be at 7:00, just in time for sunrise at 7:07. After the service we’ll all meet in our annex for a good hot breakfast. Easter Communion service will be held here at the usual time of 9:30. On this special day, we will all worship together; there will be neither children’s nor adult Sunday School. The final service of the day will be at the Alma Manor at 2:30. Services are held there every week, with Peace Church having the first Sunday of each month.
On the Sunday after Easter, April 8th, we will draw prayer partners. The prayer partner program is explained in the bulletin insert, where there is also a place to sign up as a prayer partner and a place to sign up for the Seder meal or to purchase an Easter Lily.

A Successful Breakfast

It was a lot of work, but lots of people were served fresh cooked eggs and pancakes and breakfast burritos and biscuits and homemade gravy and waffles made from scratch and sausage and bacon and three varieties of breakfast casseroles and . . . well, you get the idea. It was a true full menu breakfast. Our youth, with the help of their parents, cleared $362 after expenses. Half that amount will be given to missions chosen by the youth: Trash Mountain Project and Project Rescue of Amazon Youth will each receive a donation of $90.50.
