Youth Group to Meet

We had a good meeting last Sunday to look at the future of youth programs and Christian Education. A number of young folks were in attendance. We decided to have a special movie night for our youth on Sunday evening, October 14th from 6:00 until 8:00. A film from a few year’s back, Places in the Heart, will be shown and discussed. Youth of the community as well as our own youth will be invited.
After this, the plan is to ask the adult Sunday School to meet jointly with the youth one Sunday a month, after which the young folks might want to have a lunch and a program or activity. Details naturally remain to be settled.

Special Mission: Clean Up Buckets

At last year’s conference meeting there was an opportunity to fill one or more buckets to give to folks recovering from natural disasters. This year the need is even more immediate, so our former interim pastor, Don Miller, is again coordinating a drive to fill buckets. Here is the article from the K-O Conference “Enews.”:
No, Don Miller, Disaster Ministries Coordinator for Kansas does not have a crystal ball! But he does know that there will ALWAYS be the need after a disaster strikes. And the best time to prepare for that is BEFORE it actually strikes. So, in early August, Don began encouraging KO congregations to apply for matching grants to assemble CLEAN UP buckets as mission projects and bring them to annual meeting. Given the timing of KO annual meetings, it’s pretty likely that clean up buckets are going to be a pretty immediate need somewhere. It’s not too late to apply for the grant; assemble buckets and bring them to annual meeting; Don is prepared to help take care of the rest! what seems like a little thing can be a huge help!
Church World Service provides Clean-Up buckets to people who experience a disaster, such as flood, fire, tornado, hurricane or earthquake. Many Churches in K-O Conference have assembled some of these buckets, as mission projects in recent years. Our UCC Disaster Ministries program has just announced that there are still 60 Matching Grants available to UCC churches and other UCC groups that raise at least $250 in cash and/or in kind to assemble Church World Service Kits and Clean-Up Buckets. You can apply for one of these grants on-line and you will usually get a response within a couple of days and a check within a week This is a a project that a CHURCH OF ANY SIZE can quickly and easily accomplish!
Last year, several churches delivered over sixty buckets to the KO Annual Meeting and Don Miller, the Disaster Ministries Coordinator for Kansas suggests that churches bring buckets to Annual Meeting again this year. We know that disasters can hit anytime and clean up buckets are always needed; this is a way we can help; wherever we are! Let’s see if we can beat last year’s bucket total!
Since Church World Service does not currently have a collection and storage facility in Kansas or Oklahoma, Community UCC in Carbondale, KS has agreed to use space in their basement as a K-O Conference collection and storage site. Buckets will be kept close by until needed. Just another way to Be the church.
