News from the September 24th Bulletin

Confirmation Next Week

The confirmation class that has been meeting since last fall will be confirmed next week pending, for some, completion of various expectations.
Next week is also World Communion Sunday, a day deliberately chosen as appropriate for Confirmation that won’t “compete” with services held in other churches, which generally confirm on Palm Sunday or Pentecost. Confirmands will be given a place of honor in the communion portion of the service. Following the service, there will be a reception (with cake!) in the annex. Please plan to come and welcome our new confirmands.

Second Worship Today

In case the pastor is a little later than usual in arriving this morning, please know that he and the confirmation class did not sleep in. We will be at Holy Family at 8:00, and here at 9:30. This continues one aspect of confirmation preparation: that the class can experience and appreciate worship in a tradition different from our own. We have already visited Bethel AME Church in Manhattan, and the Islamic Center in Topeka. What we haven’t done is visit a synagogue. Perhaps that is in our future, even for those who will have already been confirmed. It is hoped that seeing other expressions of faith will raise questions and help us to better understand our own beliefs and traditions, while appreciating others.

New Confirmation Class

Four young people formed the confirmation class that was dedicated last fall and is scheduled to be confirmed next week. But for the past few months a new class has also been meeting and attending worship. The new class will be dedicated in a few weeks. Lily Ogden and Kendyl Bolinder are both freshmen at Wabaunsee High School.

Mission Fest October 15

Save the date for our mission fest. This tradition, that goes back to 1890 in our church, will once again be observed with a special speaker, alternative Christmas market, and potluck dinner. The speaker this year is from the Trash Mountain Project. The offering that day will go to support this project, which reaches out to the poorest of the poor in various places around the world.

News From Our Partner

Today First Congregational Church in Onaga will be the guests of New Hope Lutheran Church (ELCA), their neighbor in the next block. New Hope is holding a special picnic and worship in the park beginning at 5:00. The joint worship takes place just as the pastor of New Hope has left the congregation (and the denomination). The two congregations already share a Wednesday evening meal and Christian Education program, and both are beginning to ask if they shouldn’t explore some kind of shared ministry. Meanwhile, the Council of First Congregational is hosting the Consistory of Peace Church on October 22nd to explore how our two congregations will be working together as their current pastor moves into retirement.

Leadership from First Congregational and New Hope Lutheran churches host a group of children of all ages this past Wednesday as their weekly Christion Education proram gets underway. Next week the group will be divided into four age groups, including high school.
